The only thing The Departed is too much of is awesomeness. The dialogue alone is worth every penny.
Seriously, as far as the violence thing goes, if that's the concern, I'd say it has about the same or less than a typical mobster movie. Goodfellas might be a good comparison. There is the equivalent of the scene where Joe Pesci stabs the guy in the neck with a pen, but in The Departed it's with a shoe and there is far less blood. Most other violent scenes aren't drawn out for very long. Somebody shoots a guy and they cut to the next scene right away.

The Prestige is next on my list, after seeing the Departed a second time that is.
The Departed could definitely be in the Oscar race.
I really want to see The Departed, but I'm a little nervous. I think it might be too much for me.
